Žitara vas / Sittersdorf

Nine fallen partisans are buried in this village cemetery. All of them died on 9 May 1945 in Sele pri Žitari vasi / Sielach. Only later were they moved from a temporary grave to a common grave next to the church. The original gravestone (a wooden cross) only mentions eight fallen fighters:

Here rest 8 unknown Yugoslav partisans,
killed in May 1945.

In reality, nine people are buried here, which is confirmed by the entry in the death register of the parish in Žitara vas / Sittersdorf. Only after the reburial the identity of two of the fallen combatants, Janek Ledinek and Peter Gorenšek, was established, but the names of all the others have remained unknown to this day. As soon as they knew where their sons were resting, Janek's and Peter's relatives erected a modest wooden tombstone with the inscription:

In memory of the fallen on 9 May 1945, Janko Ledinek - Peter Gorenšek.
Across hills and valleys is your birthplace - may Carinthia be yours
the land that covers you, your last paradise.

Towards the end of 1970, the Association of Carinthian Partisans erected a permanent stone monument with an inscription on the mass grave of the fallen partisan fighters:

Peter Gorenšek, Janko Ledinek, seven unknown persons

Meanwhile, another name has been added after the German term "6 Unbekannte":

Srečko Omejec
