Vrba / Velden

In the place of honour of the Vrba / Velden cemetery, there is a memorial to the six partisans who fell on 20 November 1944 in nearby Žoprače / Selpritsch. All but one of the fallen fighters are unknown by name. The only one who has been identified is Andrej Ogris, known locally as Odrijev, from Mala gora / Großkleinberg near Bilčovs / Ludmannsdorf. He was born on 17 September 1924. All six partisans fell in unequal combat with the Nazi police on the farm of farmer Šluder in Žoprace / Selpritsch. Already in 1948, a temporary gravestone was erected for these partisans with the inscription:

In grateful memory of the six partisan comrades
who gave their lives for freedom on 17 November 1944 at Žoprače / Selpritsch.

Renewal of the partisan memorial in 2019

In November 2019, the Association of Carinthian Partisans and Friends of the Anti-Fascist Resistance, together with the municipality of Vrba / Velden, erected a fully restored memorial with a bilingual inscription at the place of memory, where a typical gravestone had stood since 1970:

Andri Ogris / born 17.9.1924
and five unknown partisans
killed on 20.11.1944 at Žoprače / Selpritsch.

Location:
The beautifully landscaped town cemetery is situated a little outside Vrba ob Vrbskem jezeru / Velden am Wörthersee, to the north-west, to the right of the road to Beljak / Villach.
