Šmarjeta pri Pliberku / St. Margarethen bei Bleiburg

Šmarjeta / St. Margarethen is famous for its ancient church and wooden roofs in the Carinthian style. In the cemetery, in a very prominent position, stands an upright stone square with the inscription:

To the Partisans who fell in the struggle against fascism 1941-1945 /
Urban Broman, Mirko Zdovc-Baštejev

In 1981, the Association of Carinthian Partisans added a bronze commemorative plaque with the inscription:

Franc Visočnik-Falent, commander of the 3rd Battalion of the Carinthian Detachment,
born 10. 10. 1910, died 6. 9. 1944.

Urban Broman, known as Šimejev from Šmarjeta / St. Margarethen, became a victim of the NS-police for his collaboration with the partisans; he was murdered in Gradec / Graz. His ashes were transferred by his relatives to the local cemetery. Mirko Zdovc-Baštejev, originally from Lokovica, died as a 17-year-old courier at Apovnik na Komlju on 10 October 1944. Mirko's body was found in the woods only in July 1945 and was transferred and buried with full honours in Šmarjeta / St. Margarethen. Originally Mirko had only a wooden cross with a dedication:

A nation that sacrifices its flower will not die, and neither will you,
Mirko, who fought and sacrificed, rest in peace.

Mirko's grave was always, in all post-war years, in carefully tended condition.

You can reach Šmarjeta / St. Margarethen by following the well-paved road from Spodnje Libuče / Unterloibach straight north into the slopes of the Komelj Mountains above Pliberk / Bleiburg.
