Golovica / Wölfnitz

On the easternmost slopes of the outcrops of the Svinška planina / Saualpe are several small hamlets, including Golovica / Wölfnitz. It is a small place, with only some half-abandoned mountain farms. A small cemetery with a wall around the church is dedicated to this and other isolated hamlets in the area. Inscriptions on gravestones testify that only German-speaking locals live around there. Nevertheless, the partisan graves in this cemetery have been well tended by these locals since the war. Along the southern inner side of the walls stand four beautifully carved large wooden crosses with inscriptions that tell us that a Soviet partisan, Ančka, Albin Planinšek and Katarina Golob are buried here.

Later, on 25 September 1966, a large black marble plaque with more detailed information about those buried there was erected among these crosses by the Association of Carintian Partisans:

Albin Planinšek, *27 February 1910 +27 April 1945, Luče SFRY
Katica Golob, *27 April 1927 +18 April 1945, Bela / Vellach
Ančka, +27 April 1945, SSSR
Unknown, Poland

Above the names is a bilingual inscription:

Honour and commemorate the fallen partisans who gave their
young lives for the liberation of Austria and all enslaved peoples.

Location:
Golovica / Wölfnitz is still on the slopes of Svinška planina / Saualpe, but it is located just 15 kilometres north of the foothills near Grebinj / Griffen. The place of memory is located at the ancient village church.
