Bajtiše / Waidisch

In the old abandoned village cemetery, which is almost completely overgrown with bushes and trees after the landslide, there is a stone pillar in a corner, very visibly, dedicated to a fallen partisan. It was erected in 1971 by the Association of Carinthian Partisans. The grave of Pavel Kelih, born 24.1.1891, killed 8.10.1943.
Pavel Kelih was the first to link Matija Verdnik-Tomaž with the rebels from Sele / Zell. As a partisan, he visited his home several times, but one day he was betrayed. Gendarms surrounded his home and a fight to the death broke out. Kelih defended himself and shot a German gunman, but was killed, hit by a hail of machine-gun bullets.

Pavel Kelih had already joined the Communist Party of Austria before the war, so his grave was first marked by his Austrian comrades and a plaque was inscribed (in German, with a picture of the deceased):

Here rests Paul Kelih
*24 . 1. 1891, killed 8. 10. 1943
as a freedom fighter.
Rest in peace!

Location:
The cemetery is situated to the left of the road leading from Borovlje / Ferlach to Sele / Zell, but before the village of Bajtiše / Waidisch itself.
